Northern Territory: Road trip through the tropics and the Red Centre

The Northern Territory (NT), located at the very heart and top end of Australia, is a land of vast open spaces, dramatic landscapes, and unforgettable adventures. With a population density of just 0.2 people per square kilometre, it offers a true sense of freedom and wilderness.

The Territory is divided into two distinct regions. In the tropical Top End, you’ll find spectacular wetlands, abundant wildlife, ancient Aboriginal rock art, and world-famous national parks such as Kakadu National Park and Litchfield National Park.

Further south lies the iconic Red Centre, a landscape of red deserts, rugged ranges, and immense cultural significance. Here you’ll discover Australia’s most famous natural landmark, Uluru, alongside Kata Tjuta, the spectacular Kings Canyon, and the scenic MacDonnell Ranges.

For independent travellers, the Northern Territory is a paradise of exploration. Whether you’re embarking on an epic road trip, discovering remote landscapes, hiking through ancient gorges, or camping under a sky filled with stars, the NT delivers some of Australia’s most memorable travel experiences.

Exploring the Top End independently in a motorhome was one of our greatest Australian adventures. We camped in remote locations beneath star-filled skies, surrounded by wildlife and nature. The ancient Aboriginal rock art at Ubirr and Nourlangie left a lasting impression. Cruises on the East Alligator River, Yellow Water Billabong, and Katherine Gorge revealed remarkable wildlife and rich Indigenous culture. Our highlight was spending several peaceful days at Leliyn (Edith Falls), enjoying beautiful walks and refreshing swims away from the crowds.

Red Centre Adventure: Travelling in a 6-berth motorhome through Australia’s vast Red Centre was an unforgettable experience. Starting in Alice Springs, we explored the iconic landscapes of Uluru and Kata Tjuta, enjoying peaceful walks often far from the crowds. The highlight was the spectacular Rim Walk at Kings Canyon. We also spent time hiking through the rugged West and East MacDonnell Ranges. Back in Alice Springs, we visited Aboriginal art galleries, especially the Albert Namatjira Gallery, and joined a memorable excursion to Palm Valley.

Glamping Safari Arnhem LandAs an independent senior traveler, I finally tried a group tour from Darwin to remote Arnhem Land. Our group of four enjoyed a glamping safari, hiking to an ancient rock art gallery and fascinating historical sites. We experienced a scenic wetland cruise, a remote fishing trip, and nights spent staring at the magnificent, unpolluted starry sky. It was the perfect way to explore this restricted, culturally significant wilderness safely and respectfully.
